Recently, Conservative party leader David Cameron was publically noted for a particular outfit choice, including an article by the Times newspaper, which mused that Cameron appeared to dress in much the way he intended to appear at a meeting: on the attack.
The outfit in question was a military-inspired getup, with the party leader donning a black M-65 battlejacket style coat – which happens to be one of this year’s key fashion items in the men’s fashion world. Is it necessarily a good thing when politicians stay on trend? One could argue that yes, it’s a good thing because it indicates they have their eye on the pulse and are capable of keeping up with changes in a fast-paced industry – but this also has its downside. The industry in question is, after all, the fashion industry – and shouldn’t politicians have more important things to worry about than the clothes they put on their backs?
Looking good is never something that should be downplayed, however, and if Mr Cameron had shown up at the meeting looking something like a disaster, it’s doubtless that the papers – and magazines – would have something to say about that, too. In a world where whatever he chooses to dress in is going to get commented upon, Cameron is just as well making the remarks positive ones rather than mocking. After all, that’s what he’s after from the public in general, so he may as well ensure he covers all bases.
Staying on top of fashion is something many public faces do their best to do – mainly because of the negative reactions from the media and, following this, the public – but also because it’s something they enjoy. When it comes to politicians, however, not every fashion trend is suitable. After all, they are working in an area where professionalism is the order of the day and to duck beneath that one requirement would be an action that could lead to a loss of faith from the public.
